Kuwait News Agency January 31, 2007 Serbian leader threatens wide scale war if Kosovo gets independence SARAJEVO - Serbian leader in Kosovo Oliver Ivanovic threatened on Wednesday a wide-scale war in Kosovo and former Yugoslavia if breakaway province obtains independence, claiming minority Serbs have the right to stop such a move. Ivanovic told KUNA by phone from Belgrade that Kosovo's independence without the approval by Serbs will be considered illegal and the Serbs will stop it even if it will take an all out new war in the region. However Ivanovic stressed it will not be an immediate response if independence is declared but "it will come sooner or later." The Serbian leader explained that he considers Kosovo's declaration as a move equivalent to a declaration of war, particularly when considering the strategic locaion of Kosovo and the fact that Serbs were a minority. Ivanovic's comments come a day after a visit by UN Special Envoy Marti Ahtisaari to Serbia and Kosovo which will lay down the plan for independence declaration.
