Iraq's Maliki pledges to stop violence

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki says his government is
determined to stop the on-going violence in his country, following
Saturday's deadly bomb attack at a Baghdad market. At least 130
people were killed and 300 others injured in the suicide bombing.
The attack took place in a predominantly Shi'ite area. Maliki blamed
the attack on followers of the executed former dictator, Saddam
Hussein. At least 15 people have been killed in continuing violence

helicopters which crashed in the past two weeks were shot down by
rebels killing 20 troops.

In the wake of repeated broken cease-fire agreements and violence
which has claimed 28 Palestinian lives since Thursday in the West
Bank and the Gaza Strip, Fatah's leader President Mahmoud Abbas is

holy city of Mecca on Tuesday. Talks aimed at reconciliation between

Taliban commander reported killed

NATO-led forces in Afghanistan say they have killed a Taliban
commander in southern Afghanistan during an offensive to retake a
town from the militants. They said the commander, Mullah Ghafour,
was killed in an air strike on his vehicle near Musa Qala in Helmand
province. Ghafour was the Taliban commander in Musa Qala, which the
Taliban seized on Thursday night. Several other Taliban insurgents
were said to have been killed. The incident came as the United
States took over command from Britain of the 33,000 NATO-led troops
on Sunday as part of a regular rotation of leadership of the force.

British vets gas thousands of turkeys

British government vets have gassed thousands of turkeys at a farm
in eastern England in a bid to prevent the spread of deadly bird
flu. The slaughter of almost 160,000 birds is expected to take
another two days. About 2,500 birds at the farm in the county of
Suffolk died in the initial outbreak of the virus. Police have
sealed off the area. The deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu has killed
more than 160 people world-wide in the past four years, most of them
in Asia. Experts fear that the virus could mutate into a form that
could be easily transmitted between humans. Officials have stressed
that the present outbreak has been contained and that there is no
immediate threat to the local community.

is feared that the missing men may have been poisoned by toxic gas.
The La Preciosa mine, the site of the explosions, produces coal for
domestic consumption.

could suffer another week of heavy rains. Members of the Indonesian
Red Cross and other volunteers have been delivering food to the
