2007 JASENOVAC COMMEMORATIVE ESSAY CONTEST FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE USA & CANADA
Sponsored by the Jasenovac Research Institute In commemoration of this, the 62nd anniversary of the end of the Holocaust in Yugoslavia and the closure of the Jasenovac death camps, the JRI is sponsoring its third annual essay writing contest for students ages 14 to 18. Three prizes will be awarded to students currently enrolled in schools in the United States or Canada for an essay answering the following question: Explain how and why Jasenovac was one of the cruelest concentration camps in Europe during World War II. 1st Prize: $500.00 2nd Prize: $250.00 3rd Prize: $100.00 The contest will be judged by a panel of experts composed of scholars and Survivors chosen by the Jasenovac Research Institute. Entries will be accepted only by regular mail and must be addressed to: Jasenovac Research Institute, PO Box 10-0674, Brooklyn, NY 11210 USA. All entries must be postmarked no later than April 11, 2007. Prizes will be announced and awarded at the Jasenovac Day of Commemoration Ceremony in New York City on April 22, 2007. Winning essays will be published by the JRI. Winners will be invited to attend and read selections from their essays at the Jasenovac Day of Commemoration Ceremony. Rules: 1. Applicants must be born on or after January 1, 1989 and no later than January 1, 1993. 2. Essays must be typed, double spaced, and between 1500 and 5000 words including footnotes, in English. 3. Entries must be postmarked no later than April 11, 2007. 4. Applicants must provide a copy of either their birth certificate or passport and include on the cover page of their essay their name, address, telephone number, date of birth, name of school, and the name and telephone number of a sponsoring teacher at that school. 5. All entries become the property of the JRI and can be reproduced by the JRI. 6. Relatives of any past or current Board Member of the JRI are ineligible.
