Putin confirmed Russia's position on Kosmet

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed in talks with German Foreign
Minsiter Frank Walter Steinmeier in Moscow Russia's stand on Kosmet, Russian
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who attended the talks, said. Russia's
attitude was accepted with understanding, although it does not correspond to
the position of Western partners, Lavrov said. He said it is important to
coninue with dialogue to enable reaching a solution for Kosmet acceptable
for all sides, Itar Tas reports. The agency reminds that the USA supports
the plan of UN Envoy Ahtisaari, which provides Kosmet with supervised
independence, while Russia opposes that plan and supports continuation of

Lavrov: A solution for Kosmet has not been defined yet

During talks on Kosmet in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US
Secretary of State Condoleesa Rice did not overcome their different stands
on that issue, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said. Putin and Rice
agreed they aspire towards a solution for Kosmet that will be in the
interest of all the sides, but unfortunately, such a solution has not been
specified yet, Lavrov emphasized after the talks between Putin and Rice. The
USA supports the plan of UN Envoy Martti Ahtisaari, which provides Kosmet
with supervised independence, while Russia supports the idea of that plan
being the platform for talks and is in for the continuation of talks between
Belgrade and Pristina with a view to finding a solution based on compromise.
