CoE backs Serbia’s territorial integrity 26 June 2007 | 16:07 | Source: FoNet *STRASBOURG -- The CoE supports territorial integrity of its members states, Serbia included, ****unless the UN decides to redraw borders****. * “Should the UN decide to change the borders of Serbia, I expect the Council of Europe to recognize that,” the institution’s Secretary General Terry Davis told journalists in Strasbourg Tuesday. He added the Kosovo status issue was one for the UN Security Council, rather than the CoE Parliamentary Assembly. At the same time, Davis said, awaiting a decision from the UN, the Council of Europe will continue to treat Kosovo as part of Serbia. In case Priština opts to unilaterally declare independence for the province, and the United States decides to recognize Kosovo as a new state, the CoE will not change its position, “since the U.S. is not a member of the Council of Europe,” Davis concluded.
