*PRIŠTINA -- French Lt. Gen. Xavier de Marnhac will take over the
position of KFOR commander starting today.

*He will take over in a ceremony in Priština from German Lt. Gen. Roland
Kather, who steps down Friday.

Marnhac will serve as commander of the peacekeeping forces for a year
and has a large amount of international experience, including time in
Kosovo.

He has already headed KFOR as deputy commander of the NATO force in 2005.

Marnhac will be the third Frenchmen to command KFOR, a list which
includes Marcel Valentin who served during 2001-2002 and Yves de
Kermabon, who was KFOR commander in 2004-2005.

The ceremony will be attended by French Defense Minister Herve Morin,
who will visit Kosovo today.

According to the French ministry, the defense minister will be in Kosovo
for several hours and will meet with local politicians, though the
statement did not give any details as to who he would be meeting with.

This is Morin’s second visit to Kosovo. His first international visit as
defense minister was in May.
