Russia in new warning on Kosovo  
  

Russia has warned that a unilateral declaration of
independence by Kosovo could start a chain reaction.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the step -
expected on 10 December - would destabilise Europe,
and that Russia was therefore against it. 

Russia has repeatedly said that it will oppose any
deal on the future of Kosovo that is not acceptable to
Serbia. 

It has also said Kosovo is no different from other
breakaway regions, such as Abkhazia and South Ossetia
in Georgia. 

Serbian officials are meeting mediators in London on
Tuesday to discuss prospects for an agreement on
Kosovo's status. 

Belgrade rejected a plan drafted earlier this year by
UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari, which would have granted
Kosovo independence under international supervision. 

The US has indicated that it will recognise a
declaration of independence if no agreement is reached
by the 10 December deadline.
