Itar-Tass September 25, 2007 Russia calls for assistance to Kosovo status definition UNITED NATIONS - Claims that the independence of Kosovo is allegedly inevitable make one party to the negotiations refuse from making concessions, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the Russian media on Tuesday. Many would like Belgrade and Pristina to reach an agreement, “but some say that we will have to face the reality – a unilateral proclamation of independent Kosovo – if that does not happen,” Lavrov said. “We think this is wrong.” The troika of Russia, the United States and the European Union is preparing direct negotiations between the sides, Lavrov said. “Mutually acceptable guidelines of this process have been coordinated at the troika. The sides must find their solution, there is no other way,” he said. It is possible to resolve the Kosovo problem only on the basis of international law, which implies a resolution of the UN Security Council. The resolution may be adopted only when the sides reach consent, Lavrov said. “Before that happens, UN Security Council resolution 1244 remains valid, and any attempts to disregard this resolution will contradict international law,” Lavrov said. “Everyone interested in the stronger stability in the Balkans, the respect for international law, and the prevention of harmful and dangerous precedents are doing their best to help the sides find mutually acceptable solutions directly,” he said. =============== Group Moderator: [Е-ПОШТА ЗАШТИЋЕНА] page at http://magazine.sorabia.net for more informations about current situation in Serbia http://www.sorabia.net Slusajte GLAS SORABIJE nas talk internet-radio (Serbian Only) http://radio.sorabia.net Yahoo!
