========= Serbia's Kosovo resolution a 'pre-electoral' move: Slovenia http://www.eubusiness.com/news-eu/1198783922.2 27 December 2007, 23:35 CET (LJUBLJANA) - The Serbian parliament resolution warning against Kosovo's independence should be seen "as part of the pre-electoral atmosphere in Serbia," Slovenia's foreign minister said on Thursday. "Most of the political operations in Belgrade is targeted for domestic pre-electoral use," Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel told the Slovenian news agency STA in an interview. He added Belgrade should ask itself "how could, on the long-term, a state survive being surrounded by European Union member states, and not being part of that union." Slovenia is the only former Yugoslav state that has joined so far the European Union and will be the first newcomer to assume the six-month rotating presidency in January. Slovenia has included among its top priorities during the presidency further EU enlargement and the integration of the Western Balkans. The Serbian parliament passed on Wednesday a resolution underlining their opposition to Kosovo's independence and warning of repercussions for the Balkan country's European integration. The resolution warned in particular that Serbia would reconsider its diplomatic and all other relations with states that recognise the independence of Kosovo, which formally is still part of Serbia, included the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with the European Union. Rupel reminded Belgrade has in the past opposed any attempt to link the solution of the Kosovo problem with Serbia's EU integration process. "I believe that they haven't changed their minds on this concern," Rupel was quoted as saying to STA. Serbia will hold presidential elections on January 20. Text and Picture Copyright 2007 AFP.
