DEMONSTRATIONS IN LONDON ON SATURDAY, FEB 23, 12-4PM

We, the British Serbs, strongly oppose the acceptance of the unilateral
declaration of independence of Kosovo by the British government. We feel that
such a move by our British government represents a direct violation of
international law (UN Resolution 1244), and sets a dangerous precedent that may
provoke a call for independence in other multiethnic states in the Balkans and
in other parts of the world.
As we know only too well, any destabilization in the region would require an
increase in peacekeeping troops, placing increased pressure on British troops,
at the very time when Britain's military is already severely overstretched.
Britain and other European nations in particular, have a strong interest in
preserving the integrity of all countries in the Balkans.
We support the voices within the international community who have expressed
grave concern in opposition to the acceptance of Kosovo's independence and we
hope that the current crisis will be resolved by further mediation and
negotiations, which will result in an outcome that will be acceptable to all
sides and endorsed by the UN.
We believe that recognition of sovereignty of a new country outside of the UN
mechanism brings an unacceptable level of uncertainty, based on arbitrary
interpretation of individual facts and circumstances, which can be viewed very
differently from different viewpoints. Indeed, it is quite evident that
consensus is lacking within the EU, let alone within the wider international
community concerning the "uniqueness" of this case.
The 75,000 British Serbs know very well that each ethnic group in the Balkans
believes in the "uniqueness" of its own claim to statehood and that there are
many such overlapping claims. By accepting such a principle in public
international law, the British government is potentially creating an immediate
quagmire for the Balkans which may in time also affect other volatile regions
in the world.
We therefore plan to stage peaceful demonstrations on Saturday, 23 February in
Whitehall, opposite Downing Street from 12.00 - 16.00 to voice our concern.
