Kosovo Urges Release Of Ex-PM
Ramush Haradinaj
21 March 2008 Pristina _ Kosovo top leaders urged the release of former Prime
Minister Ramush Haradinaj in a letter sent Thursday, to the Hague Tribunal
where he is on trial for war crimes.
The President, the Prime Minister and the Speaker of the Parliament of Kosovo
signed the letter to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former
Yugoslavia, ICTY, claiming his innocence.
A verdict in Haradinaj's case is expected in early April.
Kosovo institutions are aware of their responsibilities and unconditional
commitments to fully cooperate with the ICTY, according to international law,
the letter added.
Haradinaj was a regional commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army in the west of
the territory. Two of his brothers were killed during the conflict. After the
war, he set up the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, AAK, and in the elections
of October 2004, his party came third. Forming a coalition government with
Kosovo's largest party, Haradinaj was selected prime minister.
However in March 2005, Haradinaj resigned and surrendered to the tribunal. He
was accused along with two others, Idriz Balaj and Lahi Brahimaj of taking part
in a conspiracy to drive Serbs out of Kosovo through murder, rape and torture.
All three deny the 37 charges against them. They could face life imprisonment
if convicted of any of the charges.
In their letter, Kosovo's leaders expressed their readiness to ensure every
guarantee and assurance required by the international community and the
Tribunal, in order to facilitate the release of Mr. Ramush Haradinaj.
Without trying to prejudice the cases of the Tribunal, the letter says the
institutions of Kosovo believe in the innocence of Mr. Haradinaj.
