Editorial: The consequences of Kosovo's shortcut to separation from Serbia

The full consequences of the foolhardy free pass to illegal secession that
the United States and dozens of allies just handed Kosovo are becoming
apparent. It may feel nice to fulfill the dreams of Kosovo's Albanians to be
free of Serb oppression. Yet last month's forced separation of the mostly
Albanian province, contrary to international law, undermines stability and
rewards extremists who drove 200,000 non-Albanians from their Kosovo homes
over the last nine years. 

The results include the collapse of a Serbian government that previously
embraced reforms, economic liberalization and the path to Europe. 

On tap is the de facto partition of Kosovo that will challenge NATO troops'
restraint and further undercut Kosovo's economic future. The imposed
dissolution of Serbia's centuries-old claim to Kosovo lets U.S. troops head
home as soon as European troops arrive. But it sets the stage for more
instability in Europe at a time when America can least afford to be without
its European allies in Afghanistan and Iraq.
