The EU will not suspend the Interim Trade Agreement with Serbia, a part of the 
Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA).

 However, the agreement will not come into force until
Serbia fully cooperates with the Hague Tribunal, Novi Sad daily Dnevnik
writes today.

According to the daily’s sources in Brussels, the EU Enlargement
Commissioner Olli Rehn managed to persuade the EU countries and leaders
of the EU Council not to allow the implementation of the interim
agreement on July, and to the, after only one day, suspend it. 

"It’s a very bad scenario. We would be sending a very bad message to Serbia and 
to its citizens,” Rehn was quoted as saying. 

He also added that it was essential for the EU to "keep a low profile
about the interim agreement until Serbia meets all the necessary
conditions for it to come into force, and thus help the pro-EU parties
in Serbia,” Rehn said. 

The commissioner continued that the EU
must act in a way that will demonstrate that “the ball is in Serbia’s
court and that the speed of the European integrations depends entirely
on Belgrade”. 

According to the daily’s sources, Rehn intends
to write a statement, along with the future French presidency, which
would be "very positive for Serbia". 

"The idea is to enable
the interim agreement to be implemented even as early as August, if
Serbia meets the requested conditions,” the unnamed EU diplomat said,
and added this meant that the arrest of any of the Hague fugitives
would create an atmosphere for the agreement to be applied. 

The same diplomat said that at this point, "some EU countries could
start the process of ratification of the SAA". "The ratification in the
Serbian parliament would not be necessary in that case, but a positive
decision could be made", the report said.
