The observation of the 93rd anniversary of the defence of Belgrade in 1915 7 October 2008 14:04 ImageWith the paying of homage and the laying of wreaths of the Memorial Tomb of the Defendors of Belgrade at the New Cemetery, the 93rd anniversary of the heroic defence of Belgrade in 1915, in the First World War, has been marked today. The representatives of the Serbian Army, ministries, city authorities and associations of citizens dedicated to the cherishing of the tradition of the liberation wars of Serbia, laid wreaths on the monument to Serbian heroes, led by major Dragutin Gavrilovic. In October 1915, mounting attacks across the Sava and the Danube, the Drina river and from Bulgaria, the armies of central forces had a task to encircle and destroy the Serbian Army. The commander of the Second Batallion of the Tenth Regiment, major Gavrilovic, issued a historic command to Belgrade’s defendors, before the agression of Germans, Austrians and Hungarians: Soldiers, heroes. The Supreme Command has erased our regiment from its records. Our regiment has been sacrificed in the honour of Belgrade and Fatherland. You do not need to worry about your lives, as they do not exist any more. So, forward to glory! Almost all the defendors lost their lives in the charge and Gavrilovic was heavily wounded.
