Radio Serbia March 23, 2009 Tomorrow 10th anniversary since the beginning of NATO bombing Last weekend in Serbia and few other world capitals, the marking of the Memorial Day for victims of NATO bombing has begun, and tomorrow, on the anniversary of starting the air-strikes on the FR Yugoslavia, memorial services will be held in many Serbian cities and towns. At noon, a siren will mark a minute of silence and members of the Government will pay respect at a special open session, where Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic will give a speech. Serbian ministers will lay wreaths on memorial spots to the civilian, army and police victims of the bombing. The 10th anniversary will also be marked in France, Canada and the USA. The bombing of FR Yugoslavia lasted for 78 days and took the lives of more than 2,000 civilians, including 88 children, as well as 1,002 army and police members, while another 6,000 people were wounded. The NATO intervention followed after unsuccessful negotiations on the Kosmet crisis, held in Rambouillet, in February and March 1999. It ended on June 10, with the passing of UN Security Council Resolution 1244. One day earlier, the Yugoslav Army and NATO had signed a Military Technical Agreement, which specified the withdrawal of Serbian forces from Kosmet and arrival of international troops. According to UNHCR, some 230 thousand Serbs and other non-Albanians have left Kosmet since the arrival of the peace corps. ------------------------------------ =============== Group Moderator: [email protected] page at http://magazine.sorabia.net for more informations about current situation in Serbia http://www.sorabia.net Slusajte GLAS SORABIJE nas talk internet-radio (Serbian Only) http://radio.sorabia.net Yahoo!
