Tadić: Priority is combating crime, corruption 30 May 2009 | 15:27 | Source: Beta BELGRADE -- Calling new elections would be the height of irresponsibility, and the priority remains combating crime and corruption, says President Boris Tadić. "Serbia finds herself in the midst of a struggle against organized crime, and we will take that struggle to its conclusion,” Tadić told a session of the Democratic Party’s (DS) main board in Belgrade's Sava center. Speaking of corruption, he stressed that “no-one is protected in any party,” saying that all parties in Serbia were mired in corruption, as were certain other professions and sections of society. The DS leader said that the country did not need new elections at this moment in time, but rather needed to continue with reforms. “If Serbia doesn’t finished the jobs started in the Seventies and Eighties, and those after 2000, and fails to conduct reforms, come 2020 we’ll face insurmountable problems as a society,” he stressed. According to Tadić, Serbia needed to aspire to bolstering democratic institutions and credibility, and that elections were not the answer right now. “In a stable country, elections aren’t held every year. That’s irrational behavior and a reflection of political immaturity,” the president reflected. Early elections would not bring new jobs or stability as the opposition parties claim, he said, adding that now was the time to put forward ideas, not parties. The DS leader highlighted the importance of regionalization as an essential issue, stressing that its goal was not to divide Serbia, but strengthen its integrity.
