The upshot is that the culprit is FAT 32. Marc, is it possible that you're file system is formatted to use FAT 32, as opposed to NTFS?
Yep, my main project drive is a crusty old FAT32, but my other drives are NTFS.
We need to doc this somewhere to save people like me whinging about it :)
