But I'm not actively doing any SJ development right now. I keep hoping I'll get back 
into it, but
I have a lot of distractions.

I think most illegal character issues were resolved in a recent "patch" release. Check 
the SJ SF
project page for the latest client download. File size issues could be a problem if 
you're using
the GLPL text diff engine. The GPL text diff engine does not have any size 
restrictions that I
know of. Let me know if you need help figuing out what I'm talking about.
