JUBA, 04 November 2011 [Gurtong] - The South Sudanese Foreign Minister Nhial Deng Nhial told the press in Juba Thursday upon arrival from Australia that the two countries have signed diplomatic agreements in a bid to foster cordial relations. “I visited Australia to formally sign the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of South Sudan and Australia. I am glad to announce that Australia has pledged to co-operate with South Sudan in areas of mining and agriculture”, he said. The Minister added that the country excels mainly in these two areas and is willing to co-operate with the fledging nation in provision of support. He cited the main challenges hindering the growth of the new nation as lack of capacity and technical expertise. “We stand to gain a lot in the area of capacity building as we seek to explore our natural resources”, said Nhial. He also revealed that South Sudan was invited and attended the 66th secession of the Commonwealth business council meeting in Australia. “The two-day meeting gave me an opportunity to share our areas of need with foreign diplomats who are willing to send investors into South Sudan”, said the Minister. Many South Sudanese sought refuge in Australia during the more than two decades of the civil war between Sudan and South Sudan. However, despite independence of South Sudan, presence of South Sudanese in Australia is still inevitable.
