JUBA, 13 November 2011 [Gurtong] – EU Commissioner Andris Piebalgs
told the press in Juba that the Commission is developing a seven-year
strategic plan to support South Sudan on education, health and rural
development.

“The recent increases in prices and rising inflation have raised
concern to everyone. However, the government needs to put in place
good public finance systems to effectively manage the country’s
economy”, Pielbags told the press in Juba.

He explained that his visit is purposely to explore further knowledge
on how the Commission can support South Sudan on the EU areas of
interest.

“EU is currently preparing South Sudan to develop a strategic
framework that will cover the period 2014-2020. This framework will
help government addresses the needs of its citizens”, he said.

The Commissioner also urged South Sudan to diversify its economy,
pointing out that over -reliance on oil revenue can sometimes be
disastrous.

Pielbags echoed the South Sudanese President, Salva Kiir’s pledge to
co-operate with the EU for the country’s development.

“I am glad that President Kiir has pledged his government’s commitment
to properly manage its revenues to supplement oil. WE have also
invited him to visit the EU headquarters in Brussels to develop
diplomatic ties with the different departments to intensify the EU
interest to develop the infant nation”, said the official.

Last month the EU unveiled a strategy to effectively manage its aid
donations to the infant nation.
