February 1, 2012(KHARTOUM) – The African Union-United Nation Mission
in Darfur (UNAMID) said Wednesday that five trucks belonging to the
World Food Programme (WFP) were recovered in ?orth Darfur state.
The carjacked convoy of WFP trucks was seized on 30 January 2012 by
unknown gunmen between Saraf Umra and Kabkabiya in North Darfur.
The Rwandese peacekeepers based in Kabkabiya escorted the WFP vehicles
to El-Fasher after a two-day search and rescue operation, in the area
of Guldo in East Jebel Marra, the UNAMID said.
The drivers of the trucks were found unharmed. The perpetrators fled
upon the arrival of the peacekeepers. .
Sudan has recently demanded to review the number of troops deployed in
Darfur saying the de-escalation of violence and tension allow to cut
the number of the troops.
The government its army can not continue to ensure the protection of
the UNAMID troops who refuse to use their arms and become easy target
for rebel groups to get weapons and ammunitions.
The protection of humanitarian convoys destined to the needy in the
region is one of the main tasks of the peacekeeping mission which is
established by the end of 2007 to protect civilians affected by the
war between the government and rebel groups there since 2003.
