Jonglei Tribal Conflict is NOT Kuol’s Creation BY: L.L. Reuben, CANADA
FEB. 6/2012, SSN; Immature calls for Jonglei State governor Kuol Manyang Juuk’s resignation will not bring any immediate and sustainable resolution to tribal fighting in that state. Those who wrote articles uttering that the governor ought to be replaced by someone else are naïve and illegitimate in their attempt. Koul Manyang Juuk by any measure has failed considerably, and so are the other states governors, all are failures. The difference here is that in Jonglei, the innocent are dying on regular basis due to- of course - tribal fighting and killing ultimately. The ineptness to judge precisely is directing others to make wrong calls. So, who else should be blamed? WutNyang and Riek Machar: An enormous chunk of Jonglei’ conflict should be attributed to none other than the current vice president, Riek Machar. In his 1991 split, Riek tried to model somewhat of Nuer Empire. The today’s White Army was partial result of that. White Army since the time of its creation has sequentially assaulted neighboring Dinka (Duk, Twi and Bor), apart from their infamous 1991 massacring of so many innocent lives of the mentioned Dinka tribes. Even though these days WutNyang (Nuer spiritual leader) became irrelevant, Riek Machar is relevant and full with ambition. The seeds he planted have germinated and become to be known to us as Jonglei killings. Riek followers who are also Ngundeng and Wutyang believers appreciate him for these, of course. For them the killing, and the ongoing fighting in Upper Nile is part of what Ngundeng had prophesied, thus no end near, and it must continue until the chosen one (Riek Machar) entered the throne. Ishmael Konyi and Murle Konyi is a typical Murle, just like his tribesmen. “Survival of the fittest” is rule of thumb in Murlei conscience, so raiding and abducting neighbors’ properties and children are perfectly fine. Stretch as deep as the Marinas Trench, and should still find out that Murle culture is not a modern day phenomenon, it’s something that originated with them out of the dust. They have no intention of letting it go, especially, when their visible politician like Ishmael Konyi isn’t willing to change them. President Salva Kiir and his Cabinet plus the UN Kiir is in limbo, in a country where the Western intelligence sits side by side with the country’s law makers, I don’t see how much decision making is left for the cowboy to make. South Sudan is co-ruled by Hilde Johnson, UN Chief representative, who is serving the population of UN personnel living in the country. Why does the UN matter, is simple to comprehend. Without problems in South Sudan, the necessity of UN is not necessary. The UN get paid to sit around so they will create situations to continue sitting around and getting paid. Some of us are oblivious to these facts, and it’s time they should be aware of them, otherwise pointing fingers on wrong individuals will not cut it. I blame Kiir for not being radical in his decision making. He is the ruler and he has to make a decision at least. Disarm the insane in Jonglei by force, and ignore any threat of pending allegations from UN, the truth will prevail later on. LL Reuben is concerned South Sudanese living in Alberta Canada.
