A million returnees expected from Sudan Thursday, 23 February 2012 08:28 South Sudan >>> .The Deputy Governor of Upper Nile State, Andrea Maya, said over one million returnees who are expected to be transported from Sudan in April this year will pass through Upper Nile State.
In a meeting with the UNMISS Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General for Political Pillar Raisedon Zenenga, the Deputy Governor said, with the ongoing insecurity along the border the only safe route for transporting the returnees from Sudan is through Kosti-Renk- Malakal route. "In April the Government in Sudan put it as a deadline for all the Southerners in Sudan to be transported back to the South, almost the estimate is approximately one million seven hundred so this situation in addition to the problems that we are facing is going to be a real problem and a real challenge." However, the Deputy Governor said, receiving that huge number of returnees will be a big challenge to the State as already there is a humanitarian crisis with the returnees who are on ground. He called upon the UN Family and Humanitarian partners to assist on the transportation of returnees and to provide them with basic needs such us food, water and medical facilities upon their arrival. Responding to the Deputy Governor, Raisedon Zenenga said, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with other members of the UN Family is ready to provide support to the returning Southern Sudanese. "Regarding the issues and challenges being faced by the nationals of South Sudan who are in Khartoum and those who are returning we are aware that the IOM is the lead Organization that is organizing and managing in providing support for the returning South Sudanese and the other Agencies UNICEF, UNDP and others are providing support on this side." The DSRSG and his delegation are in Upper Nile State for a one day official visit. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "South Sudan Info - The Kob" group.
