Reported by Martin Jada Gabriel, News Agency of South Sudan (NASS) RSS marks International women’s Day JUBA, 9 March 2012 - Women across the new Republic of South Sudan yesterday marked the International Women’s Day with speaker after speaker praising the leadership of the government of South Sudan for involving and including women in key decision making processes. Speaking at the occasion, Mama Mary Kiden who was a former minister for Gender and a member of parliament from Kajo Keji recalled that today women have achieved remarkable success in terms empowerment compared to the past. She said many women are holding key government positions, many girls are enrolling in schools, and a good number of women have access to medical facilities as opposed to the past. She said the history of women empowerment in South Sudan dates back to Feb 1986 with the late Mama Juan Margret who organised a meeting in Nyakuron to address bottlenecks of women empowerment. The late Juan was a director of Social Welfare, a grade three position by then. She was believed to be one of the first women in the history of South Sudan, and Central Equatoria in particular, to hold such a higher position in government. She recalled that the issues they tabled included how women can break the wall to join politics, how more women can be educated, women involvement in income generating activities and reducing if not eliminating birth related deaths among women. She observed that much as a lot has been achieved, a lot still stands on the women’s way of total empowerment. She noted that to date women still suffer from a number of violence ranging from domestic violence to organised violence. “Women suffer more from organized violence than domestic violence these days; we have seen it in most states of South Sudan”, she said. She recommended that the government should take bold stems to stop organised violence in the country. “Organized violence is what we must stop. South Sudan is already an independent county, we want all guns to be with the organised forces and not with civilians”, she said. Mama Kiden said another uphill battle for women today is high school dropouts among the girl child. She reported that most girls across the country drop out of school after completing primary education just because they are pregnant or married off early. “Mostly parents are aware of the Child Act of 2008, but they don’t report when their children are put out of school because of early pregnancy”, she. She called on the mothers to be observant of the kids until when they are able to make it to high school. Meanwhile, Natasha Emerson who is Information, Counselling and Legal Assistant with the Norwegian Refugee Council said the international women’s day means a lot for the women of South Sudan. She said it is a day for the women of South Sudan to celebrate their strength, courage, beauty and power. She further said it was a day for women to pose and look at where they are coming from, where they are and to see steps forward for better lives. Ms Emerson said women constantly need to remind themselves that the struggle for empowerment is far from over. “Although we have many success stories, women empowerment cannot be reduced to individual success stories”, she said. The day was celebrated at the Nyakuron Cultural Centre with the theme “Empowering rural women to end hunger”.
