It is good to change the way we take things and talk about them in our
New Nation.
By Jacob Makok Anei, A student of University of Juba.
MAR. 16/2012, SSN; In my daily observation within and outside our
Nation (South Sudan) and in particular on the streets, clubs and many
other social gatherings of Juba city, I have found out that most of
our intellectuals and youth are accustomed to reciting of the
following words:
Bahr El Ghazal, Equatoria, Upper Nile, tribes-- Bari, Dinka, Nuer,
Shulluk, Zande-- to mention but the few commonly in their daily
discussions and work activities. And if these mentioned above have
become the lectures of the day practically and psychologically.
What can be the possible outcome? I think you know better all the
possible outcomes for it but the simple possible outcome I know about
it is that “it widens the gaps among the regions as well as the
tribes.”

However, these regional names and boundaries were brought by British
Colonialists for their own interests and before we were all
Southerners.

To take the tribes, the diversity that exists within our tribes is
part of our culture since time immemorial but it has nothing wrong
with all our relationships and activities.
So, both our tribes and regions have no any negative aspects towards
our present situation. But the real problem is the way we take things
and talk about them.

For example, an individual is a human being and to err is human,
something natural. Any human being in his own character can do a
miracle to either his tribesmen or region men or even the people
around him basically on his own conducts which do not concern tribe.

However, instead of taking him as an individual and talking about his
characters, some people begin to provoke other things like clans,
tribes, parties, regions and etc. not knowing that they are
exaggerating the matter from being a smaller to greater one.

Up to this stage it has become a general matter that can result in
general loss of innocent lives and properties, leaving the criminal
free and busy creating other situations of his own devilish deeds.

So why don’t we call a spade a spade by giving specific names to
wrongdoers or their groups to avoid provocation from other people whom
they share some common things?

I think it is now good to categorize people according to their
behaviors like thieves if they have stolen, criminals if they have
committed any crime, cattle raiders if they have raided cattle,
corruptists if they have practiced it and so on, exclusively like
that.

Since it is clear that in any community or tribe there exists both
good and bad people in which we usually forget specially when a series
of unfortunate events take place in a certain community.

Let me take live examples of Jonglei, Unity, Warrap, and Lake States,
it is not true that all the citizens of these States are interested in
all the atrocities which usually take place at their respective
communities.

But what happens is that the majority of the people were lastly
involved in the matters when they heard the drums that call for
widening the gaps among the tribes and the states respectively, which
were beaten loudly by some few individuals whom their devils have
invested in them the spirits that always like to see people living in
chaos and death.
