Suspected South Sudan soldiers set homes ablaze, loot villagers
Daily Monitor Moyo, 12/4/2012 – Armed men suspected to be South
Sudanese soldier yesterday morning attacked Gwere West Village in
Lefori Sub-County, Moyo District, and set six huts on fire.
The five assailants, who were clad in South Sudan army uniform,
attacked villagers claiming that they were illegally residing in South
Sudan territory.
According to the witnesses, the assailants ordered residents, some of
whom were preparing to go to their gardens, out of their huts and
looted household property before setting the huts ablaze.
Mr. Charles Adrawa, one of the residents whose huts was burnt, told
Uganda Daily Monitor yesterday that “They put me at gun point and told
me to vacate because I am allegedly staying on land that belongs to
South Sudan. They then started shooting when some people attempted to
resist.”
He added they started firing in the air to disperse us from our houses
which they later set ablaze.
Mr. Adrawa said he lost three sacks of maize grain, five sacks of
dried cassava and two sacks of millet. Another man whose house was
also set in flames, but declined to be named out of fear, said; some
of the children scampered for their lives in the nearby bushes as they
(assailants) fired bullets indiscriminately in the air. Some sustained
bruises as they took cover.
The Lefori Sub-County councilor, Mr. Martin Izaruku, confirmed the
incident, saying: People in the Sub-County are tired of the constant
invasion by the SPLA soldiers. It is high time government intervenes
to save people from bloodshed.
The Moyo acting police commander, Mr. Ignatius Dragudu, said they will
deploy more security personnel in the area. “We will deploy police and
army at the border to prevent further attacks,” said Dragudu.
