JUBA, 13 April 2012 [Gurtong] - According to the resolution read by
the House Clerk before the August House Wednesday, the Speaker and the
leader of the opposition are to contribute South Sudanese Pounds (SSP)
1,500, the government and Opposition Chief Whip SSP 1,000 and the
Parliamentarians SSP 500.

“The contribution is meant to show the SPLA forces in the frontline
that the legislature, the representative of the people is behind
them”, said House Speaker Wani Igga.

Fighting between Sudan and South Sudan that started last month is
reportedly escalating, with reported aerial bombardments in Sudan’s
Unity State.

“It is an ugly development at the border. We have to be vigilant in
all the points as they (Khartoum) are aggressing us in all corners”,
Igga told parliamentarians who are about to go for a two-month recess.

He at the same time told the parliamentarians that the South Sudanese
President Salva Kiir is expected to brief the August House over the
deteriorating security situation along the Sudan- South Sudan border.

Inter-Parliamentary Union

Meanwhile, the South Sudan National Assembly (SSNA) has been admitted
as a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

“We applied and we have been accepted to that body (IPU)”, Igga told
the MPs on last week’s admission of the infant national assembly to
the world parliamentary body.

He pledged the SSNA’s commitment to honour financial commitment to
IPU, while admitting that external assistance will still be needed.

Wani said SSNA would establish an IPU committee that would compose of
eighteen members.
