The Government of Lakes State is preparing to distribute nearly 2,000
ox ploughs to farmers in a bid to boost food production in the
incoming rainy season.

Governor Chol Tong Mayay told journalists that this year the
Government of Lakes State will purchase and distribute over 1,000 ox
ploughs, adding that the rest are expected to come from NGOs.

He urged those who will benefit from the incentive to make good use of
the ox ploughs, calling for an end to the culture of playing cards and
idle sitting.

Engineer Tong advised locals to work in their farms on weekends.

He promised to give Friday afternoons free during the rain season for
civil servants to have more time to work in their farms.

The governor said the disarmament exercise is still going on, calling
on those in possession of illegal arms to surrender them to the
Government.

Engineer Tong acknowledged that the country is currently experiencing
many challenges, including threats from Sudan and economic
difficulties due to the shut down of oil production.

He appealed to the people of Lakes State to maintain peace to attract
more investors into the area.

The Governor disclosed that Rumbek will host the second anniversary of
South Sudan’s independence.

He announced that he will soon set up an organizing committee for the
celebration to take place on July 9, 2013.
