This came in a press release sent to Gurtong by the UNICEF
Communication Officer, Swangin Bismarck.

The survey was conducted among young people aged 10-24 years in
Jonglei, Upper Nile and Eastern Equatoria States collecting knowledge
and perceptions on various issues including education, youth services,
peace, recreation and sports.

“It is our hope that the findings of the survey will help to guide
actions, not just by government and partners, but also by young people
themselves, enabling them to contribute positively towards the
development of the new country,” said Dr. Yasmin Ali Haque,
UNICEF-South Sudan Representative.

The Youth LEAD Project funded by the Canadian International
Development Agency (CIDA), is an integrated youth initiative that aims
to enhance the capacities of youths through livelihood skills
development including functional literacy, enhancing the development
and provision of youth services, promoting dialogue on youth policy
and supporting government capacity development in the youth sector.

The survey identifies “limited resources within schools, inadequate
infrastructure and limited education opportunities” as some of the
issues hindering youth development. “Lack of youth friendly spaces,
traditional livelihood approaches and negative stereotypes are
hindering girls’ development,” the survey further reveals.

The report also reveals the disturbing prevalence of HIV and AIDS, low
employment opportunities and concerning support of violence among
young people.

The survey presents pertinent information that will contribute towards
developing a body of knowledge on youth issues thereby informing
delivery of services and policy dialogue.

Youth representatives, state commissioners and key youth related
ministries are participating in the dissemination workshop which will
be presided by the Minister for Youth, Culture and Sports Dr. Cirino
Hiteng and the UNICEF South Sudan Representative Dr. Yasmin Haque.
