JUBA, 15 May 2012 [Gurtong] – SHE South Sudan, the new women’s
magazine that was launched on Saturday in Juba aims at promoting
women’s empowerment and development through telling their stories.

The publication’s Managing Director Brigitte Sins said that the
magazine targets developing women’s fashion and beauty in South Sudan
in the main urban areas.

“The aim of this magazine is to provide information women need and
which is taken for granted in societies with an overload of
information, but which is lacking in South Sudan. The magazine seeks
to entertain the young woman and develop her”, Sins said.

The Deputy Speaker of the South Sudan National Assembly Fatuma Nyawang
who graced the ceremony underscored efforts behind establishing the
magazine and said it is an additional voice for women to use for
claiming their rights.

She urged the magazine editors to get focus on addressing issues such
as education of the girl child which she said has been a challenge due
to obsolete cultural practices.

“This magazine will act as our gun and we should use it to fight for
our rights. It will focus on addressing abuse of women’s rights in the
society where women make at least 60 percent of the population”, said
Nyawang.

According to the Sudan national census held in 2008, women played a
great role by being the main voters during the South Sudan 2010
elections and 2011 referendum.

However, despite their magnitude they compose the largest illiterate
population in the country and most marginalised.
