Governor Welcomes Capture of LRA Commander
The Governor of Western Equatoria State Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro has welcomed the arrest of a leading figure of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). 15 May 2012 By James Deng Dimo WAU, 15 May 2012 [Gurtong] - LRA’s senior commander, Caesar Achellam was captured on Saturday by the Ugandan army in the forests of the Central African Republic. Speaking to Gurtong on telephone from the Western Equatoria State capital Yambio, Governor Bakosoro described the arrest a big step towards ending the group’s atrocities in South Sudan. “This is in the interest of our people of Western Equatoria as well as the people of Western Bahr el Ghazal states who have bore the most brunt of the LRA’s activities. I urge the state security organs to stay alert and continue monitoring the group’s activities in the state”, he said. “This is the time for the people of Western Equatoria to peacefully resume agricultural production without fear”, added Governor Bakosoro. LRA has been blamed for human rights violations in South Sudan including rape of women and abduction of children. The group is however, far from being completely wiped out in South Sudan coupled with lingering concerns and suspicions that the LRA may once again be receiving direct support from the Khartoum government to destabilise the south.
