Juba City earmarks SSP20M for cleanliness
Monday, 21 May 2012 08:34 Lagu Francis Health >>> . Juba City Council has set aside two million South Sudanese pounds to clean the city ahead of Independence Day celebrations on July 11th. The Deputy Mayor David Lokonga says the money, sourced from the national government will be used to hire workers to clean the streets and keep the city clean. "The responsibility of the collection of solid wastes or garbage is absolutely a collective responsibility. Each and everybody need to make sure that his surroundings or his home is clean" said Lokonga. "There is no way somebody can collect your garbage. Each and everybody must make sure that his surrounding is clean. By the way, we are going to use the law," he warned. According to Lokonga, it is the responsibility of everybody to ensure the city is presentable and clean. The Mayor's office over the weekend launched the new service whereby rubbish collectors will collect garbage from people's homes to stop people from dumping the garbage in the streets. The deputy mayor says the new door-to-door garbage collection campaign will be charged on households. He says the charges will be decided by members of the City Council, payable on a monthly basis. He told Radio Miraya that the money collected would be used for hiring trucks to transport the solid wastes to dumping sites.
