 Saturday, 23 June 2012 13:22

A new college for nurses and midwives opened Friday in Juba in a bid
to cut high rates of maternal and infant mortality in South Sudan.

Petronella Wawa is the principle of Juba College of Nurses and
Midwifery. She said during the inauguration that the college can
accommodate up to 136 students and the new hostel solves the problem
of boarding, Bakhita Radio reported.

She added that currently the college has 93 students and they plan
another intake next year.

National health minister Micheal Milli opened the college.

He said he was very happy with the students who made the good choice
to join the nurse and midwifery course.

Dr Milli called on the students to give patients the full services
they promised when they start their career as nurses and midwives.

He said the government will employ all nurses graduated in midwifery.

Dr Milli said he had already submitted a list of 215 midwives to the
Council of Ministers for approval.

He added that he is waiting for a final resolution from the Cabinet.
