Kampala International University (KIU) students from the Greater Equatoria are on a tour in Yambio County of Western Equatoria State to add their voice to nation building. 15 July 2012 By Joseph Nashion YAMBIO, 15 July 2012 [Gurtong] - Speaking to Gurtong, the President of the students’ association Paska Hifito Uduho said the trip seeks to encourage harmony amongst the people of the Greater Equatoria. “We visited Yabongo Girls Secondary School to encourage them on the importance of education and how to live positive lives as students and future leaders of this nation”, she said. Uduho said they are advocating for girl- child education, HIV/AIDS, early pregnancies and promotion of agriculture for the people of the Greater Equatoria region. She noted that scholarships remain a challenge as most citizens did not know the criteria used in offering scholarships in South Sudan. The State Minister of General Education and Instructions Pia Phillip Michael said it was a good start in the new nation. He emphasised the importance of strengthening the students to embrace nationalism. “There is a need to develop these students holistically to enable them to know their cultures and customs. This will adequately prepare them for the next task ahead of them”, he said. He added that the Ministry has been supporting a number of students in different East African universities and encouraged them to spend time with their families and do their internships with different institutions in the states. This is the second state visited by the students after their tour of Eastern Equatoria State.
