Lakes and Western Equatoria states are holding an inter-state peace
conference on Friday to find means of achieving lasting peace between
their communities.

At the two-day meeting, the ministers of local government from both
states will discuss practical ways of bringing sustainable peace
between the Mvolo community of Western Equatoria and that of
neighboring Mapuordit of Lakes State.

The conference is being organized by the Community Empowerment for
Progress Organization (CEPO), a local Non-Governmental Organization
dealing in human rights and democracy issues.

Lakes State minister of Local Government, Benjamin Makuer Mabor, told
Radio Miraya on Thursday that the conference is a follow-up on a
previous peace agreement the two communities reached in April last
year.

"There was joint meeting done last year in Mapuordit regarding
inter-conflict between Lakes State community and Mvolo community of
Western Equatoria, so there were some plans and resolutions which were
laid by then. We are going to discuss over those resolutions and
evaluations of how this meeting get an effect to our communities,"
said Makuer.

The agreement was reached following inter-communal clashes that left
more than 30 people dead.

The agreement called for cessation of hostilities, free movement of
people and a halt to movement of cattle camps between the two states
until the civilian communities are disarmed.
