Edward Lino reacts to president Bashir's statement on Abyei
Sudan Radio Service Juba, 19/7/2012 – Sudanese President Omar
Al-Bashir has agreed to hold a referendum to determine the future of
the contested Abyei area - but he says that voter eligibility still
remains a “grey area.”
In response to al-Bashir’s remarks, a former Administrator of Abyei,
Edward Lino Abyei, said that the only people who have the right to
vote for Abyei referendum are the Dinka Ngok.
“I want to say that the problem of referendum in the Abyei area is a
very clear problem, and the president al-Bashir is saying that is a
“grey area”, but I want to tell you that there no thing grey in Abyei,
the grey thing in Abyei today is the greyness that come from the angry
talk of the politicians in Sudan. They are confusing this issue on
purpose. The people of Abyei are the only people who should be allowed
to cast their votes in the coming referendum, but you can’t come and
add Misseriya who have they own land, and people who have other land
cannot come. The problem is they want to vote in the Abyei referendum
and that vote will never be accepted by the Dinka Ngok,” said Mr.
Lino.
Abyei is a contested area between South Sudan and Sudan. A referendum
to decide the future of the disputed area was a stipulation of the
2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
