International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has welcomed South
Sudan's signing of the 1949 Geneva Convention, which protects
vulnerable people from armed hostilities in any armed conflicts.

These laws form the core of international humanitarian law, which sets
out rules, seeking humanitarian reasons to limit the effects of armed
conflict.

Speaking to Radio Miraya on Friday, the ICRC Communication Delegate in
South Sudan, Ewan Watson, said the Geneva Convention of 1949 have set
up respect for medical workers, aid workers, civilians and prisoners
of war and the wounded in any armed conflict.

"The limits set out in the Geneva Convention are that those people who
are not taking part in hostilities and that would be for example
civilians, that would be medical workers, aid workers and religious
personnel. Those people should be left alone; they should not be
targeted because they are not taking part in the fighting. Equally
another set of protected people are those who are no longer taking
part in hostilities", said Watson.

"They are soldiers taken prisoners, wounded soldiers; people who are
lost at sea. All these people are no longer fighting and therefore
they are not a threat. And they don't need to be targeted".

The Communication delegate calls for the incorporation of the 1949
Geneva Convention into the training of the army so that they are known
by the soldiers, civilians and religious people including other
vulnerable groups in armed conflicts.
