YAMBIO, 22 July 2012 [Gurtong] –Chairperson of Birish Women Group
Association Elizabeth Benjamin thanked the government for the support,
saying it shows its commitment to improve livelihoods of the local
women.

“It has not been easy for me because I lost my parents at a tender age
and dropped out of school. Through such activities I am able to carry
on”, said Elizabeth.

The Deputy State Governor Sapan Abui encouraged all the graduates to
be part of the training centre and help bring in others from the area
for training.

Abui said that the government will support the centre through
provision of equipment, adding that such trainings can be offered by
development partners operating in the state.

The women are glad that the rural areas have greatly improved against
the meaning of the word Birish, ‘dark region’.

However, insufficient resources have proved a challenge for the group
as it cannot afford more sewing machines and the high cost of training
materials.

The State Minister of Social Development Norma Fadul congratulated the
graduates and urged them to practice the skills acquired.

She said that Birish is one of the successful groups in Western
Equatoria and affirmed that the group was headed for more
achievements.
