On 2 November 2012, the Rift Valley Institute's Usalama Project will launch
its first report on armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
(DRC). The report is an account of the origins and trajectory of the new
M23 rebellion and its relation to the Rwandan government.*

>From CNDP to M2*3 is the first of a series of reports on Congolese armed
groups in the eastern DRC. The second report*, North Kivu: The Background
to Conflict in North Kivu Province of the Eastern Con*go describes the
historical context of the current rebellion in greater detail. The reports
will be published on 2 November. You can download early copies
here<https://www.dropbox.com/sh/a05fcwma6s2m2h4/9u54oOmBOV>.
The reports will be publicly available for free download from
www.riftvalley.net from Friday, 2 November onwards. French versions will
follow in late November.

The RVI's Usalama Project, which documents Congolese armed groups, explores
the roots of violence in the DRC, with the aim of building a deeper
understanding of all armed groups, including the Congolese army. It
involves more than a year of field-based research by international and
Congolese researchers, including former members of armed groups.*

>From CNDP to M23: The Evolution of an Armed Movement in the Eastern Con*go,
explores the roots of the latest rebellion in North Kivu, which has
refocused international attention on this complex regional conflict. The
report also discusses the implications of the rebellion for the DRC's
eastern neighbours, Rwanda and Uganda, who have been accused by a UN report
of aiding and abetting the M23.

In July 2013, RVI will be holding its fourth Great Lakes Course in
Bujumbura. Amongst others, it will also cover topics of its Usalama
reports. If you, your colleagues or friends are interested in
participating, please write to us at [email protected].

We hope you enjoy reading both reports. Please let us know if you have any
further questions about the Usalama Project or the work of the RVI.

Kind regards,

Michel Thill
RVI Great Lakes Project Officer
