JEM denies involvement in Yida clashes

March 17, 2013 (KHARTOUM) – the rebel Justice and Equality Movement
(JEM) distanced itself from armed men who clashed this weekend with
South Sudanese police in Yida camp for refugees located in Parieng,
Unity State.

Radio Tamzuj reported that one policeman and two children were killed
in clashes between the South Sudanese police and JEM members led by
Nimeiri Teiya in Yida camp, which is located near South Kordofan
border, on Saturday 16 March.

Gibreel Adam Bilal, JEM spokesperson, dismissed that his group had
been involved in this incident and called to punish the responsible of
this attack, underlining JEM commitment to international humanitarian
law on refugees.

He further said that Nimeiri is not a member of their movement,
mentioning that last year he had applied to join JEM but his demand
was rejected because he is a Lt. officer "banished from a
revolutionary organization".

The Radio Tamazuj, which covers extensively the situation in South
Kordofan and refugees camps in South Sudan, said that Nimeiri belongs
to Angolo tribe in the Nuba Mountains.

Parieng Commissioner Majok Gadet in statements to Sudan Tribune denied
that the people who had fought the South Sudanese police were members
of any Sudanese rebel group and described their attack as “banditry
act".

JEM spokesperson also dismissed that his group has any presence in the
neighbouring South Sudan.

Khartoum accuses Juba of harbouring JEM rebels. Recently Sudanese
authorities advertised a report prepared by UN experts on Darfur who
said that the rebel group has different bases in the South Sudan and
mentioned that a base in Unity with over 800 fighters.

Sudan and South Sudan signed on 8 and 12 March two agreements to
implement, among other things, security arrangements aiming to prevent
a return of war between the two countries and to prevent cros border
attacks by rebel groups from the two sides.
