The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Indian Battalion is providing free veterinary services to the local population in Upper Nile State. 23 March 2013 By Ariik Atekdit MALAKAL, 22 March 2013 [Gurtong] - The veterinary officer Lt Col Dr. Venkatesh Kumar of Indian Battalion said, “We are running a free veterinary hospital for the benefits of livestock owners. There are free veterinary medicines, free veterinary consultations and training in our hospital.” He said that it is the government of India supports the project through the UNMISS. “This is purely humanitarian efforts on behalf of the government of India to provide us with veterinary medicines and send the veterinary teams along with the Indian Battalion in Malakal at United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS),” Dr. Kumar added. “This is a combined effort of national and international agencies in which the UN in the form of Indian Battalion provides veterinary medicines and Upper Nile University has provided the campus for conducting the clinic and the Ministry of Animal Resources has provided local Veterinary doctors and nurses to carry out the job to the people,” he said. Indbatt Veterinary Hospital is situated in the Northern Payam of Makal County and aid camps are conducted in various villages and counties where livestock are found in South Sudan. Dr. Kumar said that the hospital and the services will remain in South Sudan for benefits of local population as far as the UN mission stays in South Sudan with the presence of Indian Battalion. He added that they are helping livestock owners in camps found in many counties in Upper Nile state including Renk, Melut, Nasir and Tonga. “We have extended our services as far as in Akobo in Jonglei state,” he said. The hospital also helps in training Upper Nile University students in the Faculty of Veterinary who are pursuing their Bachelors degree as well as training the newly appointed staff of the Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries. Dr Kumar asked the local owners of livestock to come to the Indian Vet Hospital if they need any training so that they keep their animals free of diseases. “The Battalion will conduct aid camp in Maban County on 26 March where we will treat animals. In the camp we will be providing de-worming as well as providing treatment to the animals in the area,” he stated. Dr Kumar said that recently they carried out operations called rumen anatomy where they bring out plastic bags and other foreign bodies occupying their stomachs and forced animals to be sick repeatedly. “So people who have got animals which are sick, they should turn up for this service which is available in our place,” Kumar said. He advised the livestock owners to make sure that their animals do not have access to plastic bags.
