The desire to see their children grow up is the wish of many parents.
But that was taken away from Ms Silvaria Ayugi, 55. She lost her son
Walter Okello when aged five. He was killed by a Lord’s Resistance
Army (LRA) group that was alleged to have been commanded by Okot
Odhiambo, now wanted by the International Criminal Court. Her husband,
John Okwany and other five relatives were also killed in the attack at
Barlonyo, in Ogur Sub-county, about 26 kilometres north of Lira Town.

Today, a monument stands in memory of the 300 people that were
massacred on February 21, 2004. Ms Ayugi was one of the lucky
survivors. She says she lost everything, including her livestock. She
says a cash reward of Shs13 billion that the United States recently
offered for the capture of the LRA leader, Joseph Kony, and his
commanders will instead make the rebels more aggressive.

“Many children are still in the LRA captivity the reward takes effect,
they may never return home,” Ms Ayugi says.

Barlonyo LC1 chairperson Tom Agwa said: “There are fears that the
elusive Kony might forge his way back to the north and revive his
atrocities, especially at this time when the reward has been
announced.”

The residents also want compensation by the government. However, Lira
Resident District Commissioner Susan Akany says it may not be possible
to pay every one.
