JUBA, 25 April 2013 [Gurtong] - Madding Deng, Chairperson of the Abyei
Community in Juba yesterday held a closed door meeting with the South
Sudanese President Salva Kiir and discussed key issues of concern but
majorly dwelled on security improvement.

After the meeting, Madding told press that the United Nations Security
for Abyei (UNIFSA) is the body providing security services to the
citizens there as deemed by the African Union and UN Peace and
Security Council.

“But we are having observation that UNISFA needs to improve the
security in the area to encourage the people who are residents and
those who returned recently,” Madding said.

“The second issue we discussed was the issue of return of the
residents of Abyei. This is very vital because if we want to make the
referendum in 2013 in October then there is need for the people to
return,” Madding added.

He said the issue of the Abyei Referendum and joint administration
were also some on discussion. Madding said the President had expressed
his commitment to support the efforts.
Thousands of residents of Abyei have since 2011 following conflicts in
the region between Sudanese and South Sudanese forces escaped the
region. Many took to South Sudan and others to Sudan.

Thought the office of the United Nations of humanitarian affairs
report that there is eminent return of the people back to their
region, Madding said many have not yet return, adding fears of
insecurity and basic service provision threaten them.

Abyei is scheduled to hold referendum in October this year to
determine whether to remain as part of the Republic of Sudan or South
Sudan.

Since the expiry of the 2005 peace deal signed between the two
nations; Sudan and South Sudan, Abyei has remained breeding grounds
for tension and conflicts for the duo.

Actually analysts have warned the region can at anytime provoke return
to war between the two nations if the issue is not solved.
