JUBA, 15 May 2013 [Gurtong] – In a statement released by the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Opiti was in a group
of three South Sudanese diplomats who left Juba on 6 May 2013
travelling to Islamabad, Pakistan to attend a six-week training
course.

Upon arrival at Dubai International Airport and while checking in for
the journey from Dubai to Islamabad, Pakistan, the three diplomats
were together in the checking queue, said the statement.

“According to our contacts with our two diplomats both concurred that
Counselor John Opiti who happened to be third in line was seen moving
out of the hall where they were together with other passengers,” said
the statement.

One of Opiti’s colleagues tried and had wanted to go to where Opiti
was but since he had already checked in, he was denied access to the
next hall where the Opiti went. He was told Opiti who went out has
lost his passport.

“After the arrival of the two diplomats to Islamabad, Pakistan on 6 of
May 2013 aboard flight EK612 Emirates Airline they called and
communicated about what happened,” the statement added.

Following concerns and several contacts made by the Ministry through
the Embassy of the United Arabs Emirates in Addis Ababa seeking to be
furnished with information concerning Mr. John Opiti it was only on
Sunday 12 May 2013 that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and
International Cooperation came to learn through a phone call from
Dubai that Counselor John Opiti was in a hospital with multiple
fractures, the statement added.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hon.
Nhial Deng Nhial immediately dispatched a team of three; Opiti’s wife
and two senior government officials to establish what had happened.
