Kuacjok- JUBA – 17 May 2013 [Gurtong] - During the commemoration of
SPLA Day, 16 May, both authorities and youth leaders in the state
voiced their concerns over the situation in Abyei.

“The problem of Abyei is a major concern not only for people of Abyei
but also to people of Warrap and South Sudan in general,” the Deputy
Governor, Akec Tong Aleu said while addressing the 30th SPLM/A
anniversary celebration.

He said the quickest solution is speeding up the referendum process in
which the status of Abyei would be determined whether to join South or
North Sudan.

He called on the International Community to be proactive in resolving
the Abyei issue because the killing of the Paramount Chief may
heighten rivalry between the Dinka Ngok and the Khartoum aligned
Misseriya.

“The killing of the Paramount Chief by Khartoum aligned Misseriya will
not be a simple issue. He was not only chief of Abyei people but our
chief as well. So, UN and AU should seriously notice that his death
will not be taken simply by Dinka Ngok, Warrap and South Sudanese,”
Tong warned.

On Saturday 4 May, a prominent Dinka Ngok Paramount Chief, Kuol Deng
Kuol was murdered by armed Misseriya while moving in UN convoy on his
way from Difra, a northern area of Abyei.

His death (Paramount Kuol), prompted anger and protests in Abyei and
through South Sudan, with both locals and authorities accusing
Khartoum government of having used Misseriya to kill the chief.

According to Deputy Governor, Warrap people will retaliate if
Misseriya cross to the state since they received reports that the
Khartoum aligned nomads are planning to secretly enter Twic County of
Warrap.

Chan Angany, Sudan People’s Liberation Movement’s (SPLM) Youth League
representative also warned that killing of the Paramount chief will
negatively impact on the issue of Abyei if the International community
doesn’t provide a quick solution.

“We youth in Warrap are unhappy with the way chief was killed in Abyei
and to make it clear, we will be ready to protect our brothers in
Abyei,” he said.

Angany emphasized that the youth will be ready for any solution for Abyei.
