INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS CONCERNED ABOUT JONGLEI VIOLENCE Saturday, 18 May 2013 14:29 | A number of international partners expressed increasing concern about continued violence in Jonglei State and called for the end of the conflict.
United States, Norway, Denmark and European Union ambassadors, United Kingdom and The Netherlands Chargés d’Affaires, Canada’s Head of Office and Switzerland’s Head of Cooperation Office issued a joint statement on Saturday calling for a political solution for the worsening situation in Jonglei State. They wrote that they were “deeply disturbed by mounting reports of abuse of civilians, including killings, beatings, and looting and destruction of homes and humanitarian facilities.” The signatories urged all parties – including the army and other state and non-state armed actors – to ensure that all civilians, regardless of ethnic group, are protected during armed conflict and enable humanitarian space in Jonglei. They called on the government to hold accountable those individuals who have committed abuses in Jonglei – including members of the security forces – through transparent judicial processes. The eight signatories remind the government that ending the conflict in Jonglei State requires meeting basic needs and addressing the grievances of communities. They invited all stakeholders to return to the agreed resolutions of the All Jonglei Peace Conference, and offered support for the immediate implementation of the measures therein. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "South Sudan Info - The Kob" group.
