JUBA, 24 May 2013 [Gurtong] - He made the statement at the State House
on Thursday when hosting the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta who is
indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against
humanity.

“The Rome statute has never been used for one of their leaders. I
think this is used to humiliate African leaders,” he said.

The two presidents agreed to push for African solutions to African
problems. President Kiir said that they have been asked to sign to the
Rome Statute but have refused yet.

Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto are both indicted by the ICC for
crimes against humanity in relation to the 2007 Kenyan election
violence in which over 1000 people were killed.

On 15 December 2010, Uhuru Kenyatta was named as a suspect of crimes
against humanity by the ICC prosecutor Moreno Ocampo for allegedly
planning and funding violence in Naivasha and Nahuru.

He has however denied the allegation and wants his name cleared by
seeking to exonerate himself.

On 8 March 2011, he was indicted after being summoned to appear before
the ICC pre-trial chamber. He was to appear at The Hague on 8 April
2011 alongside five other suspects.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni also criticized the ICC during
President Kenyatta’s inauguration ceremony on 9th of April in Nairobi
while attending the inauguration ceremony.

He was quoted as saying: “I want to salute the Kenyan voters on one
issue – the rejection of the blackmail by the (ICC) and those who seek
to abuse this institution for their own agenda.”
