Gunman kills aid worker in Lakes state

May 25, 2013 (JUBA) – An aid worker was on Thursday killed and another
injured by an unknown gunman in South Sudan’s Lakes state.

The deceased, state authorities told Sudan Tribune, worked with the
United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

The attacker, a senior security officer said, stormed Makuriric
residential area in Rumbek Central County, and opened fire on the
house where the deceased lived.

“One person called Charles Lodu from Eastern Equatoria who works with
WFP was shot in the stomach in Makuriric and was taken to Juba from
where he died,” said the officer, who asked not to be named.

Another person, he added, sustained injuries after he was shot on the thigh.
“These are criminals who have not yet been identified,” he stressed.

In recent weeks, attacks on aid workers have been a common occurrence
in the new nation, with calls for government to step up measures to
halt the practice.

The medical charity group, MSF recently accused South Sudanese
soldiers of allegedly looting their stores and properties in Jonglei
state.

Source said uniformed men ransacked and looted a hospital and premises
belonging to the organisation, an allegation the national army (SPLA)
denied.

"Not all uniformed men are our soldiers," Phillip Aguer, the SPLA
spokesperson said, adding that Jonglei is an area with several
uniformed elements.
