JUBA, 13 July 2013 [Gurtong] - President Salva Kiir on Tuesday
reiterated his government’s commitment to an amnesty he offered to
rebels fighting his government. However, the opposition said the
amnesty is not enough and that more need to be done by the government.

“Giving amnesty is not enough. The President should go as far as
declaring ceasefire in that state to so that he is committed to peace
not war,” Onyoti told Gurtong in an interview on Wednesday.

“Declare ceasefire and seek for dialogue with David Yau Yau. But the
president is not doing that,” said Onyoti.

He said the rebels should be having an objective that needs audience,
putting it that; “everybody who is fighting has objective.”

He added that, other political detainees like Ex-leader of the
opposition party the United Democratic Front (UDF) Abdurrahman Sule
should be released to indicate the government’s close commitment to
peace.

Rebel leader David Yau Yau went to bush right after the 2010 Sudan
general elections when he lost in parliamentary vote to his opponent.
Both were in the ruling party, the SPLM.

According to Yau Yau, the ruling party had rigged the results.

His activities since then has intensified and become a threat to the
government. He is involved in not only fighting government forces but
also reported to be killing innocent civilians.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan had earlier on warned his
fight could risk to become a national threat if government has not
exert adequate effort to avert the situation.

Government had made several attempts in a move to have a dialogue with
the rebel leader. However, Yau Yau denied, demanding an international
agent to be a mediator.
