Dr Benjamin meets President Kenyatta, delivers President Kiir’s message
NAIROBI, 1 August 2013 (NASS) - The special envoy of President of the
Republic, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin yesterday met Kenya’s President
Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi and delivered President Kiir’s message to
him.
According to Dr. Benjamin, the message was about the cooperation
agreement, the concern of South Sudan on the situation in the
Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic as well as
the mega infrastructural project, LAPSET, creating a transport
corridor linking the port of Lamu in Kenya to South Sudan.
Speaking after the meeting, the envoy said President Kenyatta promised
to work hard to ensure the cooperation agreement and the matrix is
implemented by Sudan. Dr. Benjamin also said the President of Kenya
told him that the success of the cooperation agreement between Sudan
and South Sudan is not only for the benefit of the Sudans alone but
also for the region as a whole.

Kenya being one of the guarantors of the comprehensive peace agreement
that brought independence to South Sudan, President Kenyatta said the
country will work for the peace of South Sudan and Sudan since any
instability in the two countries would threaten the regional security.
Dr Benjamin also reported that President Kenyatta pledged to invite
President Salva Kiir to a meeting between the four countries involved
in LAPSET which is likely to occur in August in Mombasa. He said the
meeting will mostly focus on how to proceed with the LAPSET projects
including the construction of pipelines, railway lines and airports
between these countries. The four countries are Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda
and the Republic of South Sudan.

RSS appeals for support to foster regional peace
NAIROBI, 31 July 2013 (NASS) - The special envoy of the President of
the Republic, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin has pleaded with the heads
of the states of the Great Lakes region to focus on South Sudan in
order to join hands in addressing the problems facing the country as a
result of the political crises in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
and Central African Republic (CAR).
He said the country is going through challenges because of clashes at
the borders and the high influx of refugees from DRC, CAR and even
Sudan making the young nation to become a victim.
Dr. Benjamin made this appeal today while addressing the heads of
state at the opening session of the extraordinary summit of the Great
Lakes region in Nairobi Kenya.
This is the sixth extraordinary summit this single year on the
security of the region following the crises caused by M-24 and Lord’s
Resistance Army (LRA) in DRC and CAR.
South Sudan, which is still a new member to the body, was highly
welcomed by the heads of state for taking such a move. During the
summit, the envoy extended President Kiir’s goodwill message to the
heads of state and affirmed the commitment to work for peace and
stability in the region.
He also urged the summit to encourage Khartoum to engage in dialogue
with the SPLM–N to ensure stability of South Sudan, which he said, is
being accused by Khartoum of being behind the SPLM-N.

“The ongoing friction in the two Sudans is because the government in
Khartoum thought Juba is behind the rebels who are disturbing Sudanese
territories of Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile”, he told the conference.
Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, who is the chairperson of the
conference, urged members to deal transparently with each other. He
also challenged the United Nations to streamline its peacekeeping
missions in the region to enhance impact. He also urged the regional
leaders to deploy internal peacekeeping strategies to complement
initiatives by the United Nations.
The host President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya called for a quick
political and diplomatic resolution of all outstanding issues between
Juba and Khartoum saying that Kenya, being the CPA guarantor, remains
concerned about the recurring tension in the two Sudans. He pledged to
establish a joint intelligent fusion center to spearhead the
expeditious implementation of the protocol non-aggression and mutual
defense.
The summit was attended by the presidents of Kenya, Uganda and Central
African Republic; special representative of the Secretary General,
Madam Mary Robinson; Vice President of Sudan; AU commissioner; and
delegations of the member states.

“Focusing on young people is crucial to poverty reduction", Plan
International's CEO
YEI/JUBA, 28 July 2013 – The Chief Executive Director of the global
child charity organization Plan International Mr. Nigal Champman has
urged authorities in South Sudan and its partners to focus more on the
young people which he said are “crucial in reducing poverty” in the
country.
Mr. Champman said child-focused interventions are the cost effective
ways of improving health, reducing poverty and benefitting society.

“Investing in children and the youth provides benefits the next
generation in terms of reducing child mortality rates, improved
outcome at birth, reduced rates of low-birth-weight babies and reduced
vertical transmission of diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS”, he said.
While children and youth represent more than 50 percent of the
population in developing countries, Mr. Champman said young people are
nearly 60 percent of the poor. He said this is coupled with the
growing number of orphans and extremely vulnerable children resulting
from the AIDS pandemic, conflict, child labour and exclusion which
makes the situation more complex.
Unemployment, low levels of education, health, low levels of nutrition
and infant mortality rates he said, are the intergenerational
consequences that young people across Africa face as a result of these
problems.
“We all know that young people can play an important role in national
development if provided with the right tools, the learning and
capacity to employ those tools, and a supportive environment in which
to use them”, Mr. Champman said.
He however said the same energy and vitality that can lead young
people to play a crucial role in development, if marginalized could
have “dramatic negative effects on social and economic stability".

Having invested United States $30 million in South Sudan since opening
shop in 2006, Mr. Champman said the child charity organization has
earmarked another $30 million to deepen its impact in the world’s
youngest nation over the next three years.
“We are going to work closely with the government and other players to
reduce the number of children who are out of schools especially girls;
children and their rights is at the centre of our development
efforts”, he announced in a press briefing in Juba after visiting
Juba, Lanya and Yei River counties in his four-day official visit to
South Sudan. The Plan International CEO's visit was to see first-hand
some of the organization's projects in South Sudan.
Plan International’s country programs in South Sudan focuses on
improving community health, giving children access to education, water
and sanitation, strengthening children’s capacity to participate in
issues that affect them, emergency response support and peace-building
initiatives.
"In terms of our humanitarian support especially in Jonglei State,
between February 2012 and April 2013, Plan’s in-field food
distribution, agricultural livelihoods assistance, child protection
and education in emergencies support as well as our water and
sanitation projects reached 204,000 children and their families", he
said.
"Of these 81,000 were children and youth, mainly drawn from the
displaced population, returnees and vulnerable host communities. A
further 62,000 men and 60,000 women also benefitted”, he said. He
reiterated his organization's commitmment to support in the growth
and development the Republic of South Sudan.
